Who is a part of the program? All students who come from linguistically diverse backgrounds are eligible to receive English language services. This is based on your responses to the Home Language Questionnaire (HLQ) and the English Language Acquisition policies established by Denver Public Schools.
What does the program do? The ELL program supports students with their English development based on individual needs. Students receive direct English language instruction in small groups during their Spanish block and/or English language support in the classroom. If you have questions or concerns about when and how your students is receiving ELL support, please contact Maggie Sgier at 303-759-7808 ex. 1305.
How are a student's English language skills assessed? At the beginning of the year, students new to Denver Public Schools are assessed using an English language proficiency test called the W-APT (WIDA-ACCESS Placement Test). In the middle of the year, all English Language Learners (ELLs) participate in the ACCESS for ELLs state assessment. ACCESS stands for Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to-State. This allows student progress to be monitored on a yearly basis.
